Teams of rowers line up in their boats for the cameraman in the south bay close to West Pier. The picture was possibly taken during Scarborough’s annual rowing regatta which takes place in June. Scarborough Amateur Rowing Club was founded in May 1869, and is the oldest surviving rowing club on the North East Coast. Locally the club’s main rivals are from Whitby where its two clubs, Friendship and Fishermen, compete regularly with Scarborough. Photo reproduced courtesy of the Max Payne collection.
