Dig deep for gardening greatness
More than 300 people gathered at Scarborough Spa last night for the annual All Muck and Magic Gardens Awards.
These are the Oscars of Community Gardening and are a showcase of all the good work that volunteers are doing in their own communities across the borough.
Muck and Magic awards were presented for the best private gardens, floral dis- plays from businesses, hotels and guest houses.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards and certificates to young people from eight schools and organisations in the Golden Garden competition.
Barrowcliff School were crowned Best Green-fingered School Gardeners but all the youngsters went away with certificates and prizes for their efforts.
Sheila Johnson, part of the Muck and Magic Gardening Team, said: “The children always raise the roof when they come on stage to collect their awards and this year was no exception.”
Volunteers groups across the borough were also celebrating as they received their awards in the Muck and Magic Community Challenge.
“This is our chance to say thank you to all these wonderful volunteers who do great things in their communities,” Sheila explained.
Amongst the many winners were newcomers to the competition St Michael’s Hotel who scooped a gold medal in the small hotels class and the volunteers from the Derwent Valley Bridge Library who were crowned Muck and Magic Community Garden champions.
