Filey Infant and Junior Schools are asking for parents’ views into opting out of local authority control and becoming an academy.

A five-week consultation period has started with meetings being organised for parents and carers to find out more.

If the schools do convert, they will join Filey School as part of the Ebor Academy Trust.

Harvey McCarthey, headteacher at Filey Junior School, said: “We feel that joining an academy trust which brings the schools of Filey more closely together is a fantastic opportunity for the children, parents and in fact, the whole Filey community.

“We have enjoyed working with Ebor in recent times and feel the partnership will really help to improve the transition between the different phases of children’s education, improving the overall outcomes for children in Filey.”

The York-based multi-academy trust comprises schools across York, Selby, the York- shire coast and in the East Riding.

Filey CEVC Nursery & Infant School is the latest North Yorkshire County Council primary school looking into the option of becoming an academy.

Mrs Denise Crosier, Filey CEVC Nursery & Infant School headteacher, said: “In early, informal talks with Ebor we have discovered they share our values. Should we decide to academise and join them, they would handle core business activities such as payroll, HR and premises, leaving teaching and learning to us.

“This is an exciting opportunity to add resource and increase opportunities but it is ultimately the governors who will decide at the end of the consultation process.”

Filey School has enjoyed great success since it Ebor Academy Filey became last year with the summer’s exam results much improved following a number of staffing changes including the headteacher.

English results this year increased rapidly with 68 per cent of students making three or more levels of progress, bringing the school above 2015 National levels - 67 per cent CONTINUED ON PAGE 28
