Scarborough diabetes group set to relaunch this month

-

People living with diabetes in the Scarborough area need more information and better access to health services according to a local support group.

This is the view of Mark Husler, chairman of the Scarborough and District Branch of Diabetes UK.

He said: “Diabetes is a serious condition which can lead to major health complications such as heart disease, lower limb amputation and blindness.

“However armed with the right information and correct medical treatment, it is a condition which can be managed effectively and there is growing evidence that it can even be reversed.”

Mr Husler estimates that there are between 4,000 and 5,000 people who have been diagnosed with diabetes living in the borough of Scarborough and at least that number again who are living with the condition and have yet to be diagnosed.

He said: “Now more than ever, people living with diabetes need advice, guidance and support.

“Diabetes UK is a charity that connects with and campaigns alongside and on behalf of all people affected by and at risk of diabetes, and our local support group has been doing just that for the past 10 years.

“Given the current emphasis being placed on the cost of diabetes both in human terms and pressure on NHS resources, we feel now is the right time to re-launch our support group. As well as providing a listening ear and friendly support we lobby local health services to ensure they provide the correct medical care as and when it is needed.”

The next meeting will take place on Wednesday November 9 at 6.30pm in Queen Street Methodist Central Hall.
