Young chefs can show off talents
Rotarians are asking budding young chefs to get in touch to enrol for the 2016/17 Rotary Young Chef competition.
Last year, both of Scarborough’s Rotary clubs organised a hugely successful young chef competition at Yorkshire Coast College and they are planning to do the same again this year but they need more local youngsters to apply.
Jonathan Knight, President of the Rotary Club of Scarborough Cavaliers, said: “We have contacted all secondary schools and colleges in the locality telling them about the competition and we are hopeful of a good response, including youngsters from Filey and Whitby.
“But we need to make sure that the message about the competition is out there; so any young person wishing to take part in the competition should contact Jim Martin on 01723 377752 or email jim@phonecoop.coop to get an entry form.”
The competition is open to all youngsters aged 11-17 years old who were in full-time education on August 31 this year.
Entrants will be expected to prepare a healthy three-course meal for two people, costing less than £15.
The local heat will take place on Tuesday November 29 at the Yorkshire Coast College site in Lady Edith’s Drive.
“The competition provides a real challenge to potential young chefs, testing not only their culinary skills but creativity, planning and budgeting,” added Mr Knight.
James MacKenzie, the Michelin-starred chef from the Pipe and Glass Inn in South Dalton and former student of Yorkshire Coast College, will again be heading up the judging panel, as well as mentoring the local winners.
Last year’s local winner Jack Miladinovic, a second year student at Yorkshire Coast College, went on to the reach the national final held in Lincoln, having won through heats in Scarborough, York, Harrogate and Halifax.
