Becky bearing up as charity drive brings in 4,200 soft toys
Scarborough woman collects thousands of cuddly items for The Teddy Trust
Ready, teddies, go!!
A woman based in Scarborough had all the bear necessities when she managed to collect more then four thousand teddy bears for charity.
Rebecca Carr collected 4,200 cuddly toys for The Teddy Trust from big-hearted people who operated collection points across Yorkshire, including Scarborough, Whitby and Bridlington.
The Teddy Trust is a small charity that collects and sends thousands of donated teddies and soft cuddly toys from children around the UK to children suffering the trauma of war or from sexual abuse.
Last year it sent more than 20,000 to children in Syria, Turkey, South Africa, Malawi and Kenya. This year the charity sent thousands more to children in Romania, Kurdistan, Syria, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
A spokesman for the Teddy Trust said: “Becky worked tirelessly with her mum to collect and bring us 4,200 teddies.
“Her house was absolutely full to bursting. She had to climb over teddies to get to her kitchen, and her two little girls helped sort and pack them!
“Several groups and businesses as well as individuals took it upon themselves to start collections either in their own homes or at places of work, and then Becky, her mum, and her partner drove all the way down to us in Herefordshire with a huge van load chokka block with teddies.”
Becky said: “It all started after my mum sent a Facebook link to me. We decided to send some teddies to the trust and I got a few teddies off some of my friends.
“I got in touch with the Teddy Trust and found out there were no drop-off points in the area so I set a couple up. I don’t think they thought I would get as many teddies as I did.
“After a Facebook appeal on local selling sites I was answering messages until 1am, which led to drop-off points being set up in Bridlington, Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, Hunmanby, Harrogate and York.
“It just snowballed from there. We had the support of lots of people who helped collect and deliver the teddies.
“The ladies who helped out were fantastic.
“They either brought them to me or I picked them up.”
Every teddy the trust sends cost 25p due to shipping costs plus customs and port taxes.
