Men bounce back with Driffield win

-

Scarborough 2nds returned to form after back-to-back defeats on Saturday when they grabbed a 4-1 win at fellow mid-table side Driffield 3rds.

During the early phases of the match Marco Mascucci was on fire as he proved to be a stubborn obstacle for Driffield’s strikers, numbing the threats down the left wing.

Scarborough dealt the first blow as they went 1-0 up through Jay Meatheringham, who tapped a peach of a cross from Josh Briggs after his explosive run down the right wing.

The away side’s training was paying off as they perfected a short corner, where the ball was laid off to Will Palmer and he slapped the ball in from just inside the D, giving the keeper had no chance to react.

Driffield had the opportunity to drag themselves back into the it as they were awarded a penalty flick after their attempted strike on goal was wedged in Euan Harker’s kit.

The deficit was reduced to one after the flick was calmly slotted away.

Captain Tim Erkiert bagged his goal after a decisive breakaway in the second half, as Scarborough outnumbered Driffield’s defence and he finished from close range.

Meatheringham added a fourth goal for Scarborough, which was his second of the match, by beating numerous stick tackles and stroking the ball away.

Scarborough captain Erkiert was over the moon with the work rate from everyone.

Man of the match was Mascucci, who shone in defence by intercepting Driffield’s attacking moves.

All three teams are in action this weekend for the final round of games before the Christmas Break.

The Mens firsts host Thirsk & Malton 2nds, the Mens seconds are away to face Thirsk & Malton 3rds and the Ladies are the home to Airedale.
