Beverley’s burger joint: quality matches price

With a sleek andcontemp­orary atmosphere, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Beverley, is certainly everything you would expect from a relatively upmarket outlet especially the price.

Loved by hipsters the country over for its superb range of craft beers, handcrafte­d burgers and ‘baconnaise’, GBK is at the forefront of gentrifyin­g the humble hamburger scene.

And now situated in the heart of the East Yorkshire market town’s Flemingate Developmen­t, the new chain restaurant is no exception to the hype.

Outside is akin to an Apple store, it looks minimalist and trendy. Inside is even better spacious, modern and very cool.

After a lacklustre day’s shopping, stopping by GBK to be greeted with an enthusiast­ic and friendly waiter was a welcome break from the endless repetition of milling about River Island, Topman etc.

The waiter was clearly passionate about the products he sold. He reminded me of the mustachioe­d bar staff at the Brewdog pubs popping up all over the country.

He gave us a flavour of what to expect food wise, and also teased us with the selection of pricey drinks that were on offer.

I must admit I was a bit taken aback by the rather steep £5.60 it cost for a single pint of Budweiser.

But GBK certainly deserves praise for the variety on offer drink-wise nonetheles­s.

Moving on. We were really pleased to see the decent selection of vegetarian-friendly burgers on offer.

You might ask ‘why go to a burger joint if you don’t eat meat’, and that would be a fair question.

My girlfriend had already completed the research required before we ever head off to a restaurant, and concluded the veggie options would be to her liking.

Four options were on offer: Johny Be Goat - essentiall­y a mushroom burger with goats cheese, onion, garlic mayo and more; the California­n - a homemade bean patty with cheese, avocado, chilli mayo and crispy onions; a self explanator­y Falafel burger; and the Dippy Hippy - a bean patty with beetroot, mint hummas and avocado.

In the end, we both opted for a California­n each - and we weren’t disappoint­ed.

The patty was moist and tender, unlike dozens of other variations I’ve had before.

The guacamole was genuine and jam-packed full of avocado and the burger came with additional slices of avocado to boot.

And the sweet potato fries that accompanie­d it were spoton. My favourite part was the smoked chilli mayonnaise, it simply was the best thing since regular chilli mayonnaise.

We didn’t have room for desserts, which was just as well. And this is where my only criticism comes in - the prices were rather steep.

In all, the bill rocketed to more than £30. Considerin­g all we had ordered were two burgers, a beer, a coke and a side of fries, I was fairly taken aback.

That said, it could be argued that the quality certainly justifies the quantity of money you’ll pay.
