Busy period for the club’s youngsters
Well, here we are, just a couple of weeks before Christmas and my time in Scarborough has gone by in a flash.
It seems like only a couple of weeks ago there was a photo in this paper unveiling me as the new YDO here.
It’s been a busy few months in the role and I’m enjoying it so far and getting to grips with everything to do with Scarborough life and more importantly the club.
Being in this role has certainly opened my eyes to how much work goes on behind the scenes at a rugby club to make an operation like this work successfully.
I’d like to thank the many volunteers who help with this on a daily basis, the club could not run without these people and it’s appreciated by everyone at Silver Royd.
As I’ve said it’s been a busy few months with games or tournaments being on up here nearly every weekend since it all kicked off back in early September.
Both the minis and junior teams have had nearly a full calendar of fixtures throughout and are all going from strength to strength.
If you come up to Silver Royd at 10am on a Sunday, you will most certainly get your eyes opened with all our minis running around and enjoying the game and all we have to offer at the club.
From our Under-Six group all the way through to our Under-12s, we have fantastic numbers and this is growing all the time with new children coming on nearly a weekly basis, which is testament to all the hard work the club and the coaches are putting in along with the parents who bring their kids up in all weather every Sunday.
Leading on from the minis, the juniors have also had an extremely busy few months on the playing front.
From Under-13s up to our Under-17/18s Colts, it’s been a mixed bag results wise, but as the teams start to gel and the performances start to get better I’m sure this will all change very quickly.
Playing numbers in certain age groups has been a challenge at times so far this season, but week-on-week now we are getting full sides out, so this can only be to the benefit of the teams and the club as a whole going forward.
Special mention on this must go out to our Under-14s.
Five weeks ago we had a poor number of only 10 kids coming on a regular basis, but through hard work from the boys, the parents and the coaches, we now have around 20 on our books so this group is on the up.
Along with our minis and juniors, we now have a fully fledged girls set-up, which is incredible for the club.
Now we have a team at Under-13s and Under-15s, along with the Under-18s, who join with Malton to play games on a regular basis.
This is a massive achievement to all involved considering we only had one team last year and just shows the power of women’s sport and women’s rugby in particular.
The Under-15s team are undefeated this year and we are excited to see where this group can go in the future.
Hopefully all the girls will continue to play for years to come and head into our Valkyries team and beyond.
Leading up to Christmas the pace doesn’t stop with a number of tournaments and events happening.
This week we have had three tournaments with boys and girls from the local schools coming up.
From tag rugby to sevens rugby to full contact 15s, it has had it all and hopefully each child has enjoyed it and wants to come back.
These tournaments are important and over the next few months I’m intending to give even more of my time to get out and about in all schools and give kids who wouldn’t usually play the game the experience of the fun you can have playing rugby union. Thanks for reading Graham
