A former Hunmanby councillor was inspired to clear the pathway along Bridlington Road in advance of a new train service starting next year. Nick Harvey, who is known for his work in the Hunmanby community, has been clearing up a couple of decades worth of soil and grass along with cutting back overhanging branches from the footpath.

He said: “For years people have been writing to the council, but each year it has got worse. Wheelchairs and pushchairs have had to go on the road, which has traffic going at quite a speed up the hill from the level crossing as the 30 mph limit is before the industrial estate

“I was spurred into action as I’ve been round all the businesses on the industrial estate, approaching 400 people work there, promoting the fact that there will be an hourly train service, seven days a week, and 14 trains in each direction up from the current nine during the week and six on a Sunday.

“Clearing the footpath in advance of the new improved train service from December 2017 will help to show how close Hunmanby railway station is from the industrial estate and regular timed trains have a better chance of offering travel to work opportunities.”

He praised the improved facilites at the station and the work of the Bridge family, who look after the bedding plants, and railway staff who keep it tidy. Nick has collected up 140 sacks of debris and says he would welcome an offer of transport to move them, to compost down at his home address at Stonegate, Hunmanby. Anyone wishing to help can call him on (01723) 890453.

When he has finished the section up to the industrial estate, two more sections of over grown footpath Nick would like to tackle are from New Hill mini roundabout on Bridlington Road to the railway station in Hunmanby, and the public footpath from Outgaites Lane to Hunmanby School. + WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON THE PATHWAY MAKEOVER? EMAIL NEWSDESK@JPRESS.CO.UK An outdoor accommodation specialist website has named a Filey caravan park as its top selling holiday site in the North East this year.

The figures, compiled from Pitchup.com’s bookings for 2,600 camping and caravan sites across 34 countries worldwide, show Crows Nest Caravan Park led the way for visitors to the north east in 2016, bringing an impressive 846 bookings to the region, 93 per cent ahead of last year and 23 per cent ahead of its nearest regional competitor.

Nick Palmer, manager of Crows Nest, said: “We’re thrilled to be the best-selling site in the north east for a second consecutive year. Pitchup.com’s vast client base enables us to promote our site to a much wider audience, including overseas visitors. We enjoy working with their friendly team and look forward to continuing our success in 2017.”

As the booming staycation trend continues, early bookings for the new year suggest Crows Nest is set to maintain its momentum in 2017.
