A community hub for future generations

Queen Street Methodist Central Hall was opened in 1923 following the destruction of the previous building due to the fire which raged through Boyes store and the chapel in 1915.

Although the main fabric of the building is in good order it is now 93 years old and parts of the central hall are showing their age.

This applies especially to the roof, where recently due to nail rot, many tiles have been damaged during high winds. We need to replace all the tiles on the roof and also renew a large amount of pointing.

In order to rectify the deterioration, the sum of £60,000 needs to be raised. This work must be done to enable the continuation of Queen Street as a place of worship and a hub for the community for many years to come.

The building is used seven days a week, with Sunday services, Boys, Brigade, Girls, Brigade, Queen Street Players, Singing for Fun, Friendship Club, Slimming World, art groups, Messy Church, U3A, various exercise classes and Splat messy play to mention just a few.

We are delighted that the Scarborough Symphony Orchestra uses central hall for all its concerts and Scarborough College hold its speech day in the building every year.

The Royal School of Music also uses the magnificent organ and piano for its exams.

The building is also used by many different organisations for concerts, making use of the marvellous acoustics that the main church area provides.

As Christmas approaches we look forward to the wonderful sound of music, for which we are well known. Friarage School has its harvest and Christmas services in this great building.

It is always a joy to have so many children and their parents sharing the festivities with us. The community is our priority, in particular with the aim of serving those in and around Castle Ward. Our doors are open to all who wish to share in any of our activities and it is firmly believed that we can make a difference in our locality by using our building to achieve this aim.

We have started our fundraising activities and are also looking for any grants, sponsors or friends willing to support our efforts.
