South Cliff ’s young stars show off top awards at presentation day

-

South Cliff ’s juniors celebrated a superb season at their presentation afternoon.

Built on the foundations laid by Richard Edwards in previous years, the junior section has gone from strength to strength this year as the children are maturing.

Junior club coach Ivan Oliver has developed the youngsters into talented players capable of playing the full course.

In order to cater for and keep these young players, a very comprehensive competition calendar was put in place this year for three ability levels.

South Cliff has formed a strong partnership with the Scarborough & District Primary Schools’ Sports Association as Oliver works in many local primary schools teaching basic golf skills to thousands of youngsters.

Many of these children were then given opportunities to experience a real golf club at South Cliff. A large number now attend regular coaching.

There are around 14 regular junior members and 20 blue-tee non-members.

Four juniors have now reached adult handicap status and can compete in most of the adult competitions Tommy Risker (18), Jai Johnson (27), Amy Staveley (28) and Jasmine Smalley (36).

With adult handicap status now achieved, after many years absence, the club was able to restore two very old Junior Competitions back into the annual calendar – The Norton Cup and The Hesleton Trophy.

Competing in her first Ladies competition, 10-year-old Amy Staveley won the coveted President’s Cup (best two out of three 18 hole medals).

She is also part of the Yorkshire Ladies’ set-up, along with Izzy Wilson, playing competitions against the most talented girls in Yorkshire at different courses around the county.

Risker (11) now competes regularly in men’s competitions and has rapidly reduced his handicap to an impressive 18.

With successful growth came sponsorship of over £500 – providing quality tro- phies for the major events.

Many of the sponsors attended the presentation afternoon to award their trophies for the first time.

Sponsors include: Naomi Edwards (former Curtis Cup player and English Ladies Amateur Champion), Pinkney Grunwells Lawyers, Stephen Nicholson, AMG, and Multi-Media Rescue.

Since the presentation afternoon, another major sponsor has come forward – the Order of Merit winner will now receive The McMahon Cup.

The majority of this fundraising and sponsorship has been down to the dedicated work of Gary Burrows.
