Scarboro’ storm into second

Twenty-seven Scarboroug­h Athletic Club members competed in the third round of the East Yorkshire Cross Country League, which was also the home fixture, held at Langdale End.

The traditiona­l course is one of the most testing of the six league races, and involves long stretches of muddy trails, a crossing of the River Derwent and a long uphill section to the highest point in the area.

The women’s team achieved their best result of the current season, finishing a very close second to the City of Hull AC, who are the reigning champions and have won the first two fixtures.

Emma Clapton led the team as the female runnerup.

This was her best result in the league this season, which is her first term in this senior set-up.

She was also notably the first finisher overall of all the 27 Scarboroug­h club members.

The team was completed by Sue Haslam and Nikki Carr, who both made a sea- sonal league debut.

Haslam whose last cross country race was when competing for England Masters at an Internatio­nal match, finished up in fifth overall, and ultra distance specialist Carr closed in for the scoring team in seventh place.

The team has now moved up to second overall for the season behind the City of Hull team.

The back-up was provided up by Hannah Mainprize followed by Becky May who both made an impressive league debut.

They were followed by; Anna Martin, Leoni Bradnam, Lorraine Hewitt, Fay Hetheringt­on, Jayne Graves, Lisa Baker, Carina Pelluci, Lisa Bourne, Sally Kingscott, Anna Howard, Heather Westron and Sam Shepherdso­n, who acted as the race sweeper and accompanie­d the back markers over this testing course.

The men’s team which was led by the Over-45 veteran Kevin Moment who was up in 31st overall of the 146 finishers.

He was followed by Glyn Hewitt another Over-45 veteran who was 41st .

The third team scorer was Del Hand who made an impressive club and debut as a Over-40 in 50th.

Another Over-45 veteran Owen Willis was next in 55th and headed Over-40 Dale Hepples who was 58th.

James Martin, who also made a very good club and league debut, closing in for the scoring team in 60th and thus he was well inside the top half of the field.

The men’s team was backed up by Geoff Cromack, Mark May, Dave Shipley, Dave Fox and Dave Parke.

Fifteen club members competed in the latest Sewerby Parkrun.

They were led by Ian and Issy Nicholls who ran and finished together.

Twelve-year-old Issy was the first female overall for the second time at Sewerby, and her father Ian was 12th male and second Over-50. They both ran personal best times.

Three club members were age group winners.

Dave Fox 21st and first Over-65, Lesley Bayes 11th and first Over-65. Emma Foster 16th and first Over-40

Other men were Pete Barnard 34th, David Field 40th, Mike Padgham 54th and second Over-60, Mick Thompson 68th and second Over-75.

Other females were Jenny Trown 13th, Dawn Trown 18th and second Over-40, Sharon Corden 19th, Sophie Vaughan 26th, Avril Metcalfe 29th, Liz Jones 37 and third F60

There were 11 club members competed in the latest Dalby Forest Parkrun.

They were led by Andrew Fleming who made a very good event debut with fifth overall of an above recent average of 94 finishers.

He was followed by Neil Pearcey ninth and 2nd M50, Glen Shelton 21st and second M55, Simon Valente 30th and third M60

Ruth Rutt was once again the first of the club’s females at Dalby and was third female and first F55.

She was followed by Jemma Casson sixth and first 1114, Alison Hornby 22nd, Ciara Harper 30th and second JW 11-14, Sharon Parsons 38th, Liz Kraft 43rd on her event debut, and Liz Cremer 48th.
