Beach volleyball set to spike in Scarborough
Council welcomes exciting, new opportunity
Scarborough’s North Bay will get a touch of the Copacabana when a beach volleyball court opens next year. Scarborough Council’s cabinet signed off on the plans, supported by Sport England, for the floodlit sand court on land between Hairy Bob’s Skate Park and Royal Albert Cafe in Royal Albert Drive.
The beach court will be dug out and will consist of 2ft of gravel below 1ft of sand, incorporating a drainage system.
The changing facilities provided will be painted in traditional beach hut colours.
Local team The North Riding Eagles Volleyball Club will be the tenants after securing £70,000 from Sport England to progress the scheme.
At last week’s Cabinet meeting portfolio member for tourism and leisure, Cllr Andrew Jenkinson said it was a “good news story” for Scarborough.
He added: “It will be a great addition to the North Bay.”
The committee were told there had been a lot of local support for the scheme, with no objections received before the plan’s were granted planning permission in November.
