Selfless volunteers to host community Christmas Day

-

A group of volunteers are spreading some festive cheer on Christmas Day by providing a day of food and entertainment for residents.

Monica Smith, 68, is one of 12 volunteers giving up Christmas Day with their family for the event, at Wreyfield Drive Methodist Church Rooms, and she is excited to get the community together.

The retired carer said: “I have worked in care all my life so I am used to not being with my family over Christmas and New Year. These events are so important so people can mix with friends and neighbours and have a good time.”

The day will begin at 9.30am when tea and coffee will be served ahead of a three-course Christmas dinner at 1pm. This will be followed by bingo and then afternoon tea at 4pm. The day does not cost anything for people wishing to attend, though donations are welcomed. A tombola and raffle will also take place on the day to split between paying for the food and to go to the church.

Around 30 lonely residents attended the first event last Christmas with spaces are still available for Sunday’s event.

Monica said: “I’d like to thank the people, groups and businesses who have donated so far. It really is overwhelming to see the community spirit.”

Those wanting to attend on the day can call Monica on 07939 490197.
