A singer from Filey will perform on Let It Shine for the second time after dazzling the judges and winning his spot in the next round.

Tyler Smith appeared in the first episode of the new BBC talent show and brainchild of Take That star Gary Barlow last month.

The 20-year-old won over the hearts of the judges and the nation with his rendition of Joe Cocker’s You Are So Beautiful.

Soaring through to the next round with an impressive 17 out of 20 stars, the former Filey School pupil will take to the stage again on this weekend’s show.

It was Tyler’s mum who originally signed him up to take part in the competition and Gary Barlow himself walked into the cafe Tyler works in to break the news.

Speaking to the Mercury, Tyler described the experience so far. He said: “I couldn’t believe it when Gary walked into the cafe. I knew the cameras were there but I was told they were filming for a piece on the local community.

“I was just trying to give them something to film. It was that busy in the cafe, it was like a mirage [when Gary walked in].”

He said his family and friends have been behind him all the way and the support from the community has been “amazing”.

He said: “They have always been so supportive of me. Mum said it was the hardest part of it all was keeping it a secret,” said Tyler.

He added that performing on the show was “an experience like no other” and being stood waiting for the stars to light up in front of him was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences.

He said: “Standing there it was like I was going to be dropped off a cliff in to a sea of fire.”

Having told Gary after he made it through that he’d put in the work to really impress, Tyler has spent hours rehearsing but says the second stage is something completely different. Tyler will be back on the television screen on Saturday for the second stage of the Let It Shine competition at 6.40pm on BBC One. Residents in Filey are being asked to keep an eye out after a vehicle was stolen from outside a home on the coast.

A camper van was stolen after thieves took the keys during a raid at a house in Flamborough.

Humberside Police said burglars broke into the house on South Sea Road between 1am on Wednesday January 18 and 8.45pm on Wednesday January 25.

They stole a number of items including bank cards, watches and car keys.

The keys were then used to steal a white and silver Toyota camper van from the drive.

Police believe the camper van could still be somewhere along the coastline from Filey to Flamborough and are asking people to keep their eyes open and to report any suspicions.

Anyone with information about the burglary, or the whereabouts of the vehicle or any of the other items, is asked to call police on 101, quoting crime reference number 2245009. Or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
