Rally set to zoom into Filey in coastal return

Town to host prestigiou­s two-day rally as event returns to Yorkshire coast

Filey has been chosen to host the county’s biggest and most diverse car rally. The Trackrod Rally Yorkshire will return to the North Yorkshire coast with a vast array of vehicles from the 1960s to present set to feature.

Rod Parkin, of Trackrod Motor Club, said: “We are delighted to bring the colour and spectacle of our event to Filey and are thrilled at the help and support we have received from the local council and businesses in the area.”

The two-day event will take place on September 29 and 30

The Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championsh­ip cars will begin to assemble on the Friday for spectators to view and competitor­s to sign autographs.

On the afternoon the drivers will be flagged away for a challengin­g forest stage in the Dalby complex.

The historic section of the field will be joined by a wide range of competitio­rs from the Ravenol BTRDA Rally Series and the Maxxis MSA English Rally Championsh­ip on the Saturday morning.

The competitor­s will enter the North York Moors forests for two sets of two different stages with central servicing, concluding with a final and potentiall­y decisive 10-mile stage.

The prestigiou­s event will conclude back in Filey with a ceremonial awards presentati­on on the Saturday afternoon.

The Trackrod Rally comprises of two events –The Trackrod Historic Cup, covering six stages and covering around 55 miles – and the Trackrod Forest Stages, with five stages totalling approximat­ely 45 miles.

The Trackrod Rally has raced into Pickering and Scarboroug­h in recent years, attracting a wide range of rally enthusiast­s and boosting the economy. The rally could prompt Malton veteran Steve Bannister, the most successful driver in the event’s history, to return behind the wheel in a bid to upset the higher-seeded drivers. + EMAIL YOUR THOUGHTS TO A Filey pensioner has died from his injuries after being involved in a crash near Speeton.

Police said the 84-yearold man had been taken to hospital with abdominal injuries last week and died a few days later.

The man was the driver of a black Peugeot 207 which collided with a white Ford Kuga.

It happened on the A165 at Speeton near Filey at around 5.30pm on Thursday, February 16.

The Peugeot driver was taken to hospital in Scarboroug­h with abdominal injuries.

Sadly, the pensioner died a few days later.

A police spokesman told the Mercury they were not yet in a position to name the man, who is from the Filey area.
