Purcell earns first merit win of season
In bitterly cold and wet conditions, 37 bowlers turned up to play in a merit at Westgate’s green in the Old Town in Bridlington.
The final showdown was played out between two away bowlers, Stuart Thompson and Andy Webb, with the latter winning 21-12.
A singles merit competition was played at Dukes Park in Bridlington.
Tim Purcell, Robin Hood’s Bay, and David Lowe, Northcliff, made it through to the final.
Purcell won through to the final by beating North Cliff ace Paul Morgan 21-18.
Lowe earned his place by getting the better of Borough’s Mick Gates 21-16.
Purcell beat Lowe 21-12 earning his first merit title of the season.
The consolation competition at Dukes was an all Whitby affair as Steve Dover and Alan Landers battled it out. The winner was Dover 21-13.
The last merit of the season before Champion of Champions was a drawn pairs at Whitby.
Honours were taken by allwomen pairing Jo Leeman, a home bowler, and Katie Morgan from away.
They beat Steve Shannon, also from away, and Dukes Park’s Kevin Gates 21-17.
Shannon and Gates brushed aside the valiant pairing of Alison Roe, Whitby, and Sue Wilkinson, Borough, in the semi-final 21-11.
Leeman and Morgan beat Ray Leeman, Whitby and Jo’s husband, and Dukes Park’s Geoff Price, 21-16 in their semi.
Tea and biscuits was won by Stuart Thompson, from away, and Lynn Rippingdale, Brid Bay.
They beat Northcliff ’s John Copper and Tim Purcell, Robin Hood’s Bay, 21-20.
Champion of Champions will be held on Sunday at Eastfield.
Tea and biscuits start at 9am. Main competition at 11am.
Eastfield hosts an open day on Saturday from 10am. All welcome.
