Scarboro’ aces make a splash
Scarborough Swimming Club are celebrating opening the 2017 season with a successful Spring Yorkshire Championships.
With 21 qualifying swimmers taking part, the quality and commitment to the winter training programmes was paying off, with some impressive results.
Up against the best swimmers in Yorkshire, the Scarborough swimmers rose to the challenge and did not disappoint.
Opening the event, national swimmer Amy Corcoran continued to show she is a force to be reckoned with.
Qualifying for and competing in all 15 of her events, she went on to earn herself 12 North Eastern qualifying times and finalist swims.
Showcasing her depth of talent, she claimed silver medals in 200m and 100m breaststroke and 50m butterfly.
Bronze medals in 200m and 50m butterfly and 400m and 200m IM, with top 10 finishes in 800m, 400m, 200m and 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly.
Since September, teammates, Joe Kelly and Finnian Hutchinson have stepped up their training with head coach Sam Greetham and this has paid off.
Kelly was a formidable opponent, dominating all of his heat swims with impressive personal best times, he earned six North Eastern qualifying times and finalists swims.
Powerful racing in his finals saw him rewarded him with top 10 finishes and po- tential national rankings in 400m and 200m freestyle, 200 m, 100m and 50m breaststroke and 400 m IM.
Hutchinson fiercely took on the distance freestyle events, determined swims rewarding him with equally impressive improvements in his times.
A competitive final saw him further improve his rankings to earn a top-10 finish for 400m freestyle.
Bursting onto the Spring Yorkshire scene, 15-year-old Scarborough Para-swimmer Angus Leckonby demonstrated his potential in the S14 events, with big personal best swims.
Proving that commitment to training brings results, he earned himself an impressive four silver medals in 100m back, 100m breaststroke, 200m IM and 400m freestyle and be crowned Yorkshire S14 champion with a gold medal for 100m butterfly.
These results earn him qualification to the prestigious British Para-Swimming International meet in April.
Adam Dawson, 15, was also looking strong.
Having earned entry to 10 events, he claimed a top 10 finish and NER time in the finals of his 50m backstroke.
The Whitby SC pathway swimmers Ben Wilkinson and Henry Cornforth also had a good championships.
Their extra training at Scarborough helping to secure a pleasing fourth-place finish in the 50m freestyle finals for Cornforth and Wilkinson earning his first NER time for 200m butterfly.
Numerous personal best swims and good experience was gained by the rest of the qualifiers, Nathan Mundey, Owen Hobkinson, Sam Moment, Joseph Moment, Ben Clarke, Lewis Dobson, Chloe Holloway, Jessica Constantine, Georgina Calvert, Alexandra Beeson, Alisa Guerin, Phoebe Dawson, Katy Snell, Cameron Swiers and Atlanta Dowkes.
