Warnock leads tributes to Adams
Neil Warnock has led the tributes to former Scarborough FC winger Steve Adams, who sadly passed away on Friday aged 57. Warnock, who is now manager at Championship side Cardiff City, described Adams as “somebody who just made me smile.” Adams was a part of Warnock’s side for their first season in the league and he went on to play 48 games scoring five goals, before moving on to play for Doncaster Rovers, Boston United and Macclesfield, among others.
In recent years Adams had been suffering from cancer. He was diagnosed with the disease in 2012, but he still attended many of the Boro reunion gatherings, including one at Scarborough RUFC.
Warnock said: “Steve was the life and soul. Even when things weren’t going our way, he was just somebody who made me smile.
“Steve was a really good lad to have in the dressing room, maybe he wasn’t the best player in the squad, but I knew what he contributed to us.
“Whenever I had success at clubs I’ve had good dressing rooms. Steve definitely helped with that at Scarborough.”
Boro teammate Mitch Cook added: “Steve had been ill for a few years, but he loved coming to Scarborough, so he made sure he came to the reunion at Scarborough Rugby Club.
“He was one of the funniest player I have ever known in a changing room, whenever he walked into it the mood lightened.
One great memory I have of him was when we played away at Portsmouth in the League Cup back in 1988.
Neil had us in for a team meeting to talk tactics and we noticed that Addo was missing.
All of a sudden he walked in dressed in a full sailor’s outfit with whistles and everything.
“That was just typical of him, he was just a real bright spark.”
