Scarborough’s Danny Price has recalled the night he beat Tony Bellew, after the Liverpudlian’s sensational win over David Haye on Saturday. Former professional cruiserweight Price beat Bellew in the finals of the ABAs in 2006 following a heated build-up to the fight that saw the Scouser pen an article in Boxing News Magazine leading up to their bout.

Price recalled: “I beat him on points back in 2006 at York Hall in London.

“There was a bit of bad blood. He did an article in the Boxing News the week of the fight saying I know who’s boss.

“I was reading it laughing as he knew I had his number because we used to spar all the time together and I always used to have the better of it.”

On the fight itself, Price insists the scores should’ve been wider than the 8-6 winning margin.

“It was close, but it shouldn’t have been,” added Price. “I won 8-6 but it should have been a lot wider.”

Price admits he was stunned by Bellew’s win against heavy favourite Haye at the O2 in London, adding: “I don’t think he’s that good.

“I just think he’s fit and game. It looked like Haye’s timing was way off.”

Bellew called out WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder after his shock win.

The unbeaten American is another man Price defeated as an amateur, and he believes Wilder would win any potential clash between the pair.

“Wilder would be too big and too strong,” said Price.

“He would blow him away I think. There again, I thought Haye would do that so you never know in boxing.”

While a return to the ring isn’t on the cards for Price, who walked away from the sport in 2013 after recording nine wins, three by knockout, he insists he misses the buzz of the sport.

“I’m missing boxing, just the fighting, not the training and dieting.

“There will never be anything to replace that buzz of winning fights.”
