Boro prepared for their Flamingo Land Stadium opener when they kicked off the preseason work with a 2-0 win at East Yorkshire Carnegie on Tuesday night. Football returns to the town on Saturday when Boro host Sheffield United in a sell-out game that kicks off at 3pm.

Steve Kittrick’s side prepared for that in comfortable fashion at Dene Park, with Scarborough lads Joe Danby and Jimmy Beadle giving them a solid win.

“It was the first time they played together, but there were a lot of plusses,” said a pleased Kittrick.

“We didn’t let a goal in, and that shows the lads want to keep clean-sheets, which is what wins you games.

“It wasn’t about the result, it was about the lads’ fitness and one or two of them have surprised me.

“There are some players coming back in for Saturday’s game as well, which is another positive.

“Emile Sinclair was ill on Tuesday night, Jamie Price is injured, while Rob Youhill and Dan Thirkell are both currently away.”

Kittrick is excited about the prospect of Saturday’s huge clash when over 2,000 fans will fill out the Flamingo Land Stadium.

He added: “Saturday will be a different test, against a full-time side and on a different surface.

“The lads have got to embrace it because it is the first game back at the new ground and everyone will have smiles on their faces.

“Over the next few seasons it is about working up the leagues, our ultimate aim is to push on towards the Conference.

“It is small steps towards that, but Saturday will be a giant step for this club.

“It means a lot to the people, who have been around the club for 10 years and have had to put up with a lot.

“It also means a lot to the people of Scarborough, who can finally welcome football back to the town.”

Boro controlled Tuesday night’s friendly from the beginning, with keeper Tommy Taylor only making a handful of stops.

The visitors took the lead just before the break, when a barrage of pressure finally told and Danby rose in the box and looped a header over the keeper and into the net.

Beadle, who arrived on the pitch at the break, extended the lead with a neat finish at the start of the second period.

Beadle and another returning player in Carl Stewart went close to making it three as time ticked on.
