Around 250 former pupils descended on Northstead Primary School as it celebrated its 80th birthday.

From pupils who attended the school when there was an air raid shelter on the field to pupils who only left three years ago, everyone was welcome to join in the celebrations.

The current pupils created a time line telling the school’s story from when it opened on August 27, 1937. Year 6 pupils gave visitors a tour back in time discussing the history of the school.

In this time a lot has changed. The school once had an entrance for boys and one for girls and now only teaches primary school children rather than an infant and junior school.

Former pupils who walked the halls decades ago spoke of how much it’s changed and how much “brighter” it looks now. Shaun Hopper, deputy head teacher at Northstead, said: “Everyone said they couldn’t believe how much it had changed but there are things that remain the same that they remember from when they attended. The sign outside has been there since it opened, so had the clock. It was so nice to see so many people attended from former pupils to former staff who didn’t leave till 4pm. It was really nice to get the whole community together.”

Cake and refreshments were on offer and there were band and choir performances.

The celebration day has also inspired the creation of a memory book as former pupils were asked to write down their fondest memory of their time at the school.

Every year the Year 6 classes will add to the memory book when they leave.
