Scarborough hotel gets new owner from Singapore

-

Scarborough’s Beiderbecke’s hotel has a new owner.

The Scarborough News understands it has been bought by local investor Roman Scott’s Calamander Group Inc.

Mr Scott, who grew up in the Filey area and went to university in Manchester, founded the Singapore-based holding company on 2006 and it has a wide property empire.

The Scarborough 23-bedroom hotel in the centre of the town and formerly called The Central, closed earlier this year and was on the market with a guide price of £650,000.

It is not known what the plans are for the hotel, which was on the market as a possible conversion into flats and apartments.

Calamander Group Inc has offices in Singapore, in Sri Lanka in Colombo and Galle, and in Bangladesh in Dhaka. It employs more than 300 people. On its website it says “The group is unusual in that it was founded with a written constitution and has a mission that goes beyond delighting customers and making profits, and includes social, employment, charitable and design objectives.”

It is believed that Mr Scott will be visiting the town next week, Colin Ellis handled the sale and in its listing it said of the hotel: “Internally the hotel boasts many features, being Grade 2 listed, and offers an impressive entrance hall, reception, bar and seating area, restaurant with feature stained glass atrium, additional public wine bar (Red Square), board room, passenger lift and a commercial kitchen with walk-in fridge and freezers.
