Tracey Nathan, a Shelter hub manager in Yorkshire, said: “On a daily basis, we speak to people and families who are desperatel­y trying to escape the devastatin­g trap of homelessne­ss.

“A trap that is tightening thanks to decades of failure to build enough affordable homes and the impact of welfare cuts.

“As this crisis continues to unfold, the work of our frontline advisers remains absolutely critical.”

But the council say that improvemen­ts have been made.

Andrew Rowe, Scarboroug­h Borough Council Housing Manager said: “The number of households living in temporary accommodat­ion in our borough over the last five years has decreased.

“This is in direct contrast to the national picture, where the numbers are increasing.

“We recently undertook a multi-agency ‘sweep’ to help identify rough sleeping levels and this indicated that the number of people sleeping rough has reduced since this time last year, which again, is the opposite of the national trend.”
