Castle Howard opens for its Christmas season on Saturday – and here’s your chance to see one of Britain’s greatest stately homes in its festive finery – for free! This year’s Christmas displays have been curated by theatre designers Charlotte Lloyd Webber and Bretta Gerecke, with each of the 26 rooms or spaces treated as individual theatre sets.

The house is transformed into a remarkable Christmas experience that feels like a theatre performance – but without live performers.

The elaborate decorations are part of a packed programme of seasonal activity. Highlights include:

A new cosy indoor Christmas market in the Courtyard in the recently renovated Old Stables to operate alongside the farm shop, Courtyard Café, Carriage House gift shop and garden centre.

A brand new Christmas afternoon tea, served beside a roaring fire in the Grecian Hall.

Father Christmas experiences, including the Enchanted Evening with Father Christmas (limited spaces available).

The return of the gingerbread model of Castle Howard, complete with a working gingerbread train.

Father Christmas’s Magical Garden, a new familyfriendly sequence of rooms.

Our prize is a family pass, worth £47.85, for entry into Castle Howard and its grounds on any day up to and including 23 December. The pass is for two adults and up to three children, although under-4s are free.
