Singer Dana who won the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest with All Kinds of Everything, will be at Filey Methodist Church on November 16, 7pm, for an evening of music and faith.
Sincerely Yours 1YMCA Theatre, Scarborough, Sunday November 19 at 2pm Following the 100th birthday of Dame Vera Lynn, the Forces Sweetheart, in March, a new show about the life of Dame Vera Lynn will be paying a visit to the YMCA Theatre. Telling the story of the forces sweetheart will be Lorrie Brown.
She has devised the show with her husband and coproducer Gary Birtles. “During my show we talk about the work she did during World War Twoand we tell people about her life and what shaped her into becoming the forces sweetheart,” said Lorrie. “She started her career singingin the dance bands and that is where we will start.
“We will be performing on stage with a live seven- piece band and singing many of the songs she would have sung in her early days, then moving on to her time entertaining the troops and hosting her own radio show Sincerely Yours.”
Also on the bill will be support by another wartime favourite, George Formby performed by Colin Bourdiec.
At the end of the show the audience can record a message on video which will be put on to a DVD and presented to Dame Vera at the end of the tour. Doors open at 8pm Scarborough Jazz Club welcomes back an eightpiece band that creates a fabulous big band sound from a small front line thanks to the arranging skills of Dave Clegg, noted local pianist and arranger for more than 50 years. The band plays Dave’s arrangements of classic big band tunes from the repertoires of Buddy Rich, Count Basie and others as well as modern jazz standards by the likes of Cannonball Adderley spiced with cutting edge new arrangements. Each set also features the stylish vocals of Rich Adams. Completing the line-up with Dave on piano are Steve Whitehead (alto sax), Ralph Alder (tenor sax), Nigel Blenkiron (trumpet), Tony Turner (trombone), Bob Walker (bass) and Dave Pinkney (drums). Michelle Rothery, American mezzosoprano Annabelle Pepper and pianist Frank James feature in the concert. Michelle graduated from the Minnesota Centre for Arts in the USA. Since then she has had an international singing career in many countries including Germany. Japan and Italy.
At Thursday’s concert she and Annabelle will be singing a wide mix of arias and songs. Frank will also be playing piano solos to suit the occasion.
The concert starts at 12.30pm. Admission by donation 4Arrives Father Christmas Scarborough Harbour, Saturday November 18 from 11.30am Thousands of people will gather at the seafront to see Father Christmas will arrive at the harbour at 11.30 am on November 18. He will be at the Grotto, Boyes Stores, from 1pm. Opening times from November 19 until December 24: Monday to Friday 10am -12.30 and then 2pm to 5pm Saturday 10am to 5pm Sunday 11am – 4 pm. 5Endeavour Whitby Christmas Festival
Wharf, Friday November 17 to Sunday November 19 The festival will include a range of attractions and activities alongside a Christmas market. An amazing range of stalls will be available over the three days.
Today, launching the weekend, a community lantern procession will parade from the Pannett Art Gallery to the festival site. Even if people haven’t had the opportunity to make a lantern they are welcome to bring along a torch, a glow stick or similar and join the parade.
Whitby Endeavour Rotary will be bringing along Santa and his sleigh to lead the procession and we will be accompanied by the Caedmon College band. The procession will arrive at the festival site at 6.30pm Yorkshire Coast Radio will be playing music, supported by local musicians. The evening culminates in the switching on of the Whitby Christmas Lights. Tomorrow, from 7p to 7.30pm, the mayoral auction in aid of McMillan Nurses and WHISH. This will be followed at 7.45pm by a firework display. Fairground rides will run throughout the weekend. Free 6Angels Castle Howard at Christmas: on High Castle Howard from November 18 to 23 This Christmas a host of angels will descend on Castle Howard. Inspired by its archiecture, interiors and art collections these creatures, classic and contemporary, will populate the grand state rooms to spectacular effect. Visitors will also enjoy Castle Howard favourites including the Christmas tree in the Great Hall and the Bompas and Parr’s Gingerbread Castle Howard. Younger visitors will be entranced by the Magical Christmas Garden. There will also be a chance to pre-book an Audience with Father Christmas or an Enchanted Evening with Father Christmas. Twilight Visits over the weekend of December 16 and 17.
