SBC leaders: why are we still waiting ...

-

At a meeting of South Cliff Community Group, Nick Edwards, director of Scarborough Borough Council, made a short presentation on the sale of the bowls club site.

He confirmed that there would be public consultation prior to the planning application concerning the use of the green.

The club annual general meeting on Sunday will confirm another successful year during which membership increased, finances are healthy, fundraising and social activities are well supported and we bowled pretty well in all our leagues.

We are still awaiting a planned meeting with the chief executive (Jim Dillon) and with the council leader (Derek Bastiman).

Residents across the borough continue to support the ‘Save the Green’ campaign.

Our thanks to each and every one of them Tony Campbell, chairman, South Cliff Bowls Club Filey Road Scarborough residents and also support from people outside the area.

On a daily basis we are receiving more of the petition forms.

It has been so supportive to have the potential sale of the bowling green issue raised through the paper.

We are now at a critical point however and as I understand it, bids for the sports centre site plus the bowling green are being discussed now.

One point I would like the wider public to be aware of is that at the South Cliff Community Group meeting held last Tuesday, officer Nick Edwards stated publicly that there would be a consultation with the bowls club and the local community before a cabinet decision was made.

This is the first time there has been a suggestion that any formal consultation would take place.

At present Tony Campbell chairman of the bowls club is still awaiting a response from Derek Bastiman and the chief executive regarding a meeting to discuss the potential sale of the bowling green.

We are anxious to keep the campaign in the public awareness and have several ideas.

Thank you so much for your support. Sue Rowlands South Cliff Bowls Club Filey Road Scarborough agree. There is room and support (including some councillors) for both in this town and this is confirmed in my discussions.

Are we going to continue with a small cabal suiting their interests and spend our taxpayers’ money to do that?

Or are we going to re-instate local government democracy and allow the people to have their say and to be listened to by those whom they elected to represent them.

Filey Road Scarborough The losers? - The electorate, for whom this council (and I exclude the many opposition councillors who do represent their wards) has nothing but contempt, even to the extent of obtaining special dispensation to vote for themselves when the public called for a vote of no confidence.

Cllrs Fox and Bastiman’s names will forever be associated with the tearing out of the heart of Scarborough.

As Cllr Bastiman took over as leader of the Cabinet I wrote to him that I expected him to pursue his goals “ruthlessly”. Demolition of the Futurist was one of them. Daphne Barr Prince of Wales Terrace Scarborough put everything back in the trolley then move aside to pack our bags was a nuisance and took us about 10 minutes but the service was good and the young man very polite.

We had spent £168, so felt pleased with our visit and savings.

A week later we received a parking penalty of £90 saying we had spent 10 minutes too long in Lidl car park.

If we paid within 14 days this fine would be ‘discounted’ to £45!

We did not notice the signs and it never entered our heads that there was a 90-minute time limit to do our shopping.

We have paid the £45 but will probably not visit Lidl again.

Scarborough and businesses can get grants to install points. Up to now only Lidl have grasped the nettle.

Tourists coming to the resort with electric cars will not be able to charge up until York.

The council could make the Park and Rides more attractive by installing multiple points and also at the Sports Village. Tom Farrell Lairs Lane
