Squash fans bouncing at prospect of new academy at Silver Royd

resentatives of the rugby club, Scarborough Council and sponsors including John and Richard Guthrie of Broadland Properties, Boyes Stores and sportsman Tony Outhart joined contractor GMI Construction Group at a ceremony. McCain and Gary Ledden’s Nippys taxis are also supporting the venture.
Rugby club president David Coates was presented with a commemorative spade to mark the occasion. On completion of building works next June, the new facility will be operated by Barons Fitness Centre.
Graeme Young, chief executive of Scarborough Rugby FC, said: “We are delighted that the construction is under way. The new centre will add to the reputation that Silver Royd holds as one of Yorkshire’s finest community sporting venues. Kevin McCabe said: “Squash in past times has enjoyed a long and successful history in Scarborough and so at our new academy to be built within the footprint of the excellent SRUFC’s headquarters. We will create a Centre of Excellence working with schools and businesses to kick start and re-invigorate this wonderful game in our community for the benefit of all. “In addition, the courts can be used for Racquetball, a blossoming sport that is becoming more popular.”
He has offices in Scarborough and abroad. He arranged a Sheffield United team to play Athletic in Scarborough’s opening friendly game at the new football stadium.
