Filey is finally lined up for Tour de Yorkshire glory. The town, along with Muston and Folkton, has been included on Stage Three of the 2018 race, which will take place on Saturday May 5.

Stage Three, titled the Market Towns stage, will start in the Yorkshire Dales town of Richmond and finish in Scarborough’s North Bay.

In between it will make its first swing through Filey and the surrounding villages.

Filey MP Kevin Hollinrake said: “It is fantastic for Filey and it can show what a great place it is. Brilliant news.

“The tour is a terrific boost for North Yorkshire and next year for Filey, in particular.”

“I’ve already had many messages from local people who are really excited about what this means for the town, not just on the day itself, when famous cyclists such as Mark Cavendish and Lizzie Deignan pass through, but also because of the positive benefits it will bring to the economy both before and after the event as the whole world can see what a beautiful place they live in.

“It will be a day to remember.”

The MP added: “I am delighted with this news as I have been working with its creator, Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Sir Gary Verity, and his team for some months to make sure Filey is included in the 711km route.”

Cllr Derek Bastiman, leader of Scarborough Borough Council, said: “We’re over the moon to see that Filey, for the first time, will get a chance to shine in next year’s Tour de Yorkshire. The town’s community will, without a doubt, pull out all the stops to welcome the race to the Yorkshire coast in true Filey style.”

Muston Cllr Godfrey Allanson said: “It’s good news for Filey even better news for Muston. We always put on a good show so I expect people will do lots of displays, plus it will generate plenty of ideas for the Scarecrow festival. It will be wonderful.”
