This year’s 2017 Winter National Swimming Championships were held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, a top class event and a Commonwealth Games qualifier.

Attracting the top swimmers in the country, Scarborough’s 15-year-old Amy Corcoran had qualified for five events.

This would be her last winter competition as a junior swimmer and came at the end of a tough 15-week training programme.

Spread across five days, Corcoran showed strength and determination in the fiercely competitive races.

She was rewarded with two top-10 junior age-group finishes for her 200m breaststroke and 200m butterfly events, earning the qualifying youth times for the prestigious Edinburgh International swim meet, to be held in March 2018.

Meanwhile, over 260 swimmers took part in the at English Federation of Disability Sport Winter National Para-Swimming Championships in Manchester.

British Para-swimmers ended their year, with 14 World and 22 European records. Among the record breakers were Rio stars Eleanor Robinson and Jessica-Jane Applegate.

Scarborough Swimming Club’s S14 Paraswimmer, 15-year-old Angus Leckonby was thrilled to be part of the action.

Qualifying for six events across the weekend, he rose to the challenge with his trademark enthusiasm.

Strong swims rewarded him with new personal best times in all his events. Building on his experience across the weekend, he finished day one with a top 10 finish in his 50m freestyle in a new best time of 29.38

Gaining in confidence for the second day of competition, Leckonby added top 10 finishes for his 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly.

Digging deep for the final event of the weekend, the 200m freestyle, he swam a new personal best time of 2.14.29 to finish in sixth place overall and qualifying him for the British Summer National Championships 2018.
