Eight of Graham School’s GCSE Latin students, from years nine and 10, competed with “fortitudo” in a Classical Reading competition, organised by the University of Leeds.

The young linguists were reading alongside a number of private and grammar school students from across the Yorkshire region – in truth, Gra- ham was the only state school represented in their category.

Following an introduction from the Deputy Head of Classics at the university, there were some simply stunning performances from some of the quietest and most conscientious students at the school with some of the most confident public speaking delivered by several ‘shining stars’.

Fred Varley delivered a ‘typically understated’ performance, full of passionate gesticulations and superb pronunciations.

Out of 50-plus competing students in Graham School’s category, the school had the only student who delivered their reading without a paper copy.

The reading was presented with maturity, clarity and conviction and paid dividends, as India Simmons went on to be crowned the winner of the competition with her intense delivery being highly commended.

She was also applauded for her superb commitment, dedication and retention skills.
