The promoter of races at Oliver’s Mount is confident of having more motorbike racing at the famous venue thanks to further safety improvements.

The promoter of races at Oliver’s Mount has said that he is confident of having more cycle racing at the venue.

Last month, the popular Spring Cup was pulled at the last minute after the motorcycling governing body, the Auto Cycle Union (ACU) said that following three attempts at inspecting the course it could not grant a Race Licence.

Peter Hillaby, of the Auto 66 Racing club, which runs the races, said the issue was over safety improvements needed at the circuit.

He told The Scarborough News: “We’re on the way. People have been very generous and we will get there.

“I still think we could have got there [for the Spring Cup] but the ACU were not willing to help.

“I don’t think they are interested in bike racing by the way they act.

“We have been ordering the Recticel (safety fencing foam and insulation) in time for [the Spring Cup] but we had trouble getting it into the country in time.”

Since the race was cancelled on April 11 a number of people who had bought tickets for the Spring Cup had expressed their anger at the club online, saying they were struggling to get refunds.

In its statement on April 11 Auto 66 Racing said it would be providing details for ticket holders “in the coming days”.

However, no details were forthcoming.

One ticket holder, who asked to remain anonymous, told this paper: “I understand they have problems with a insurance permit this has been a ongoing problem since last year, but they still took payments for tickets. Myself and a few friends have paid in excess of £120 per couple for camping and race tickets. Unfortunately for us the twitter and email isn’t responding and there’s been no luck with the phone calls either. They cancelled the event with only a few days to go not giving prior warning just a note on their website with a brief statement telling us why. We received no email or anything.”

Mr Hillaby said that there was an update due to be issued but said refunds would be available. He added: “We will offer people [to switch] tickets to any of the other races but if none of that works for them they can write to us to get a refund.”
