Tuscany flavour for new exhibition at Woodend

A touch of Tuscany comes to Scarboroug­h thanks to a new exhibition entitled Flowers from an Italian Garden this month at Woodend, The Crescent.

Using oil pastels, it is inspired by the flowers of a 13th century town house in the medieval walled town of Sansepolcr­o in Tuscany and the Italian Gardens at South Cliff.

Entry is free and the event runs from May 6-27, 9am-5pm weekdays and 10am-4pm at weekends.

Red Arrows return to big regatta weekend

The Red Arrows will be swooping into Whitby for its traditiona­l Regatta, the biggest event in the town, thanks to funds from Scarboroug­hbased Sirius Minerals. The aerobatic display aces will be flying on the Sunday of the big weekend, which takes place August 10-13. A Dakota from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will also display over the weekend, which includes rowing races and the flag-grabbing greasy pole competitio­n.

Jade’s ray of light for the Rainbow Centre

Some of world’s largest inflatable kites fly in

The skies above Bridlingto­n North Cliff at Sewerby Fields will be filled with kites when a free festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, May 19-20, 10am to 5pm, with some of the world’s largest inflatable kites flown by profession­al flyers. There will be the chance to have a go at flying a kite. The event, hosted by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the Northern Kite Group, is sponsored by St Stephen’s Shopping Centre in Hull.

Nashville buccaneer is heading to Imperial Bar

Nashville-based colourful mandolin and accordion player, singer-guitarist Tom Mason will be playing on Friday June 29 at the Imperial

Bar for free in Filey. He will also perform on Friday July 6 at the Woodend Gallery in Scarboroug­h with local band Morning Bride. Tom played last year at Filey Folk Festival run by Christophe­r Lee – this year’s packed Filey festival starts on Friday. See page 50

Jewel of Cote de Jade shines on Scarboroug­h

Scarboroug­h has been highlighte­d by a magazine in the twin French town of Pornic, widely distribute­d throughout the Brittanic ancient port, known as the ‘Jewel of the Cote de Jade’. It published an interview with Michele Harriott, president of Scalby and Newby Twinning Associatio­n, establishe­d in 1989. Four Pornic artists are exhibiting at Woodend gallery June 14-July 8.

Lisa gets set for the royal wedding ...

Lisa Whitton, East Yorkshire manager for Hull Children’s University, has been invited to Windsor Castle for the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in recognitio­n of her work with young people in Bridlingto­n and the East Riding. “It’s absolutely wonderful,” said Lisa, after 18 years working with Humberside Police’s youth engagement team.

Twenty cars at the ready for new road access

The remarkable engineerin­g feat that created Valley Bridge Road is featured in a new book, Scarboroug­h From Old Photograph­s, by prolific author Robin Lidster. The 96-page book, published by Amberley of Stroud for £14.99, includes 160 images from Victorian days to the growth of mass tourism. The opening of the new bridge in 1928 was like the start of a race, with 20 cars waiting at the ceremony.

The shipbuildi­ng boom in the days of young Cook

A new exhibition Whitby in the Time of Cook: The Making of a Great Seaman is this year’s exhibition at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, Grape Lane, Whitby.

It covers the shipbuildi­ng and shipping boom, connection­s to the towns of the North East, to London and to the Baltic. The young Cook himself travelled as far as St Petersburg in 1750. Opening times until Sunday November 4 are 9.45am to 5pm.

Success of engineerin­g week to be celebrated

The success of Scarboroug­h’s Science and Engineerin­g Week is to be highlighte­d at a Made in Yorkshire gathering of manufactur­ing and engineerin­g businesses in Leeds on May 17. The event was first held at Plaxton’s showroom nine years ago and has seen more than 30,000 students benefit from top national and local company exhibition­s at the Spa.

The lost stone age village of Star Carr is revealed

Star Carr, an important Early Middle Stone Age village which stood on the edge of now-extinct Lake Flixton, has revealed more about life at the time than any other site in the world. Scarboroug­h’s Rotunda Museum is showcasing objects. Admission is £3 for a year and free for under-18s. Opening times are Tues-Sun 10am-5pm, closed Mondays except for Bank Holidays.
