A DANGER TO PUBLICANS At the Borough Police Court before Alderman V Fowler and Mr J Sinfield, Charles Cross, labourer, Dumple Street, was charged with being drunk in St Thomas Street on May 8th. Cross pleaded guilty.

The Chief Constable said that at 8pm on May 8th PC Taylor saw the prisoner through the bar window on the White Horse Hotel, St Thomas Street, very drunk, standing against the counter. The landlord was ordering him off the premises. PC Taylor, who had previously cautioned him for trying to obtain drink at the Criterion Hotel, with the assistance of PC Found, brought him to the Police Office.

Cross said he had come in from the country, the shops were closed, and being unable to get anything to eat he got a drink of beer. There were 33 previous convictions. He was an habitual drunkard and a danger to the licensed victuallers of the town, who had on several occasions had narrow escapes.

Cross was fined 10s, and ordered to find a surety of £5 to be of good behaviour for six months, in default of which he would have to go to prison for a month. REGISTERING ALIENS Annie Bamford, lodging house keeper, 23, Tindall Street, was summoned for failing to keep a register of all persons staying who were aliens. Defendant pleaded that she did not know that she had to fill up a special form. She got them to sign the ordinary registration form. She sent the people to the police as soon as they came to her.

The magistrates imposed a fine of 5s, and told defendant to be more careful in future.
