Scarborough’s first-ever food and drink festival has been hailed as a delicious success.
The two-day event on the West Pier car park was attended by thousands of people and featured star chefs. James Mackenzie, Ollie Moore, Steph Moon and Martin Hyde were just some of those taking part at West Pier. Ann Hardy, principal of the main sponsor Scarborough TEC, said: “The festival has been a wonderful way for us to celebrate local produce and the chefs and companies who make Yorkshire such a colourful and well-respected county on the UK’s food map.
“I am incredibly proud of our students, who gave demonstrations in the cookery theatre, and we have received fantastic feedback about them all.
“Their professional attitude is a testament to the training they have received and it has been an incredibly rewarding experience for all of them.”
TEC students Anthony and Chloe provided a demonstration, cooking monkfish risotto and goat’s cheese cheesecake. Apprentices Billy Freeburn and Kyle Stevenson cooked blue cheese and herb-crusted woof goujons with minted pea dip, with student Kian Gray cooking scallops with charred cauliflower and lemon oil.
Former student Anthony Thwaite, the master chocolatier who learned his craft while at the former Yorkshire Coast College, also gave a demonstration.
A TEC spokesperson added: “Thanks to James Mackenzie, our former student and chief patron of the Michelin-starred Pipe & Glass, who gave a demonstration at the college Open Event and then at the event ... what a trooper #delicious.”
Chef consultant Steph Moon, compère of the cookery demonstrations in the marque, helped to promote the event.
She said: “The event seems a huge success and I spoke to a great deal of happy visitors who had enjoyed the demos
and the event very much. The chefs seemed very happy too.”
Among those attending was Stuart’s Foods who said: “Lots of tasty-looking food and lots going on.
A spokesperson for CU Scarborough said: “A brilliant weekend at the Food and Drink festival. Well done to everyone involved.”
Among the thousands of visitors was Jenny Hart, of Scarborough, who said on social media: “We went down ... it was great!”
The event was organised by The Scarborough News, Yorkshire Post and our Events Team, with support from Welcome to Yorkshire’s area director Janet Deacon.
