The Lanterna, one of Scarborough’s famous eateries, could change hands after saying it is open to offers for the classic Italian business.

One of Scarborough’s famous eateries could change hands. Classic Italian restaurant Lanterna has posted on its Twitter account that it is open to offers for the historic business.

The Queen Street venue has been a staple of the Scarborough food scene for more than 30 years.

Chef and proprietor Giorgio Alessio posted on the restaurant’s social media: “Restaurant for sale. Two careful owners.

“One of the oldest Italian Restaurants in Yorkshire since 1973.

“Value: Hopefully a lot of money. For rent or for sale.

“Reason for selling: Owners getting old and desire family life.

“Only genuine enquiries please.”

The restaurant has long been a popular destination for locals and visitors a like.

Food critic Jay Rayner visited Lanterna in 2011 and said that it was a place to enjoy a “life-affirming meal”.

Daily Mail food writer Tom Parker Bowles also lavished praise on the eatery for one of his columns.

He said of Lanterna: “[Scarborough is] hardly the place you’d expect to find some seriously skilled and inspired Piedmontese cooking. But it’s the truth.

“Giorgio Alessio, with his tightly curled hair and deep Italian accent softened by a faint Yorkshire burr, is a man obsessed.

“Here at La Lanterna, you’ll find a great cook in thrall to great ingredients. Not masking their beauty, or mucking about. It’s the soul of real Italian cookery.”

Its walls framed reviews from food writers.
