More than 200 people have objected to plans build a new 106-bed Premier Inn Hotel on the waterpark site in Scarborough.

A public meeting has also been organised for next week as local residents and hotel owners claim that local businesses will suffer is the chain is allowed to open.

The company wants to build a hotel comprising a reception and ancillary restaurant at ground floor level and 106 bedrooms over six floors.

The submission is now with Scarborough Council and consultation with residents has now been completed.

In its submission the hotel chain states: “The proposal is designed to support the local tourist community, integrate with Scarborough local centre and provide employment opportunities to serve the area.”

The report adds: “It is expected that the proposed development will result in the creation of 30 full-time equivalent jobs.”

However, the plans have not gone down well.

Following the public consulwelcome tation 216 people have objected, with just five supporting the plans to build the hotel.

The majority of those objecting live in Scarborough, particularly in the area around the Alpamare Waterpark, though some come from as far afield as Croydon, Coventry, Sheffield and Reading.

A public meeting will be held by the opponents of the application at Scarborough Bowls Club in Peasholm Road on Thursday May 31 at 7.30pm and all are to attend.

One email sent out to businesses by objectors states: “We fear this development will lead to the closure of many B&Bs as we can not compete with the advertising budget of such a large organization. This in turn will hit the local economy affecting a wide range of businesses.

“What will happen to the B&Bs once they close? Houses of multiple occupancy (HMOs)?”

A leaflet has also been produced urging people to oppose the building of second Premier Inn in the town.

Among the reasons given on the leaflet to block the proposal it states: “A six-storey building nearly 20 metres high is not in keeping with the local area.

“Local businesses will suffer – more hotels, B&Bs, pubs, cafes and shops will close.

“Burniston Road is already busy with stationary traffic during peak hours.

“This potential development will only add to it and increase pollution for local residents.”

The planning application will go to the council’s planning and development committee later this year.

If approved it will become the second Premier Inn in Scarborough, following the one in Falconers Road.
