Terry’s match total of £790 is handed to hospice

-

Crown green bowlers hit a ‘jack-pot’ of a total to give to Saint Catherine’s Hospice in memory of player Terry Summersgill. Members of Borough and Northcliff clubs held a memorial match at Borough’s Manor Road Green. Money collected for a raffle and refreshments – plus money donated by Robin Hood’s Bay Crown Green Bowls Club – amounted to £791. The money was handed over to Saint Catherine’s in Throxenby Lane, Scarborough, by bowlers from both clubs.

Mr Summersgill, who played for both clubs during his career which started in the 1990s, passed away in the hospice earlier this year. He was playing bowls in league matches up until September of last year.

He also took part in crown green bowls merits at clubs in Bridlington, Eastfield, Hunmanby, Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay. Mr Summersgill was also part of the volunteer group which helps run the annual Gambart Baines tournament held at the Alexandra crown greens in North Bay. “We were delighted at the amount we raised in Terry’s memory,” said a spokesman for the event. “Terry was a much-loved and well-respected member of the bowls community along the whole coast.

“It was an honour to be part of the event, whether playing, serving teas or selling raffle tickets,” she said. A trophy was made for Mr Summersgill’s memorial match by friend and Borough club mate John Purdy. It is hoped the match will be played next year.
