Watson lands GB call-up after fine Liverpool run

Kelly leads Scarboroug­h runners home in Rock and Roll Half Marathon

A record total of 41 club members competed in the latest of the world wide Rock and Roll series of road races in Liverpool.

Over 9,000 runners took part in races that started and finished in the city centre before heading out to the waterfront area.

Dr Nev Watson competed in his second ever marathon, and while encounteri­ng problems in the latter stages partly due to the hot weather conditions, hung on well to finish ninth overall of 3,234 and close to another personal best time with 2 hours 50 minutes.

He was also the third Over -35 and has been selected to represent England at a Home Nations Internatio­nal Marathon at Chester in October.

Dale Hepples and Warren Foster clocked good times despite the hot weather, with Dale heading Warren with 3 hours 41 and ultra specialist Warren clocking 3 hours 56

Sean Kelly led the 38 club members in the half marathon, and finished up in 128th overall of 8,975 and was also the fourth Over-50 of 478 in 1 hour 28 minutes.

He was followed by Ben Lang ham, who made an impressive half marathon de but when clocking 1 hour 33.

David Field was just 23 seconds of a personal best time when clocking 1 hour 37.

Fay Hethershaw led the club’s 29 women finishers in 1 hour 46 minutes, and was followed by Emma Simmons in 1 hour 49 minutes and Lisa Bourne in 1 hour 51.

Despite the unfavourab­le hot weather, four club members achieved personal best times for the half-marathon distance.

For the men, Ryan Sheader improved by 2 minutes for a 1 hour 42 minutes finish.

For the women, Hiede Coates, Jodene Langham, Sharon Parsons all ran personal best times.

Six others also completed their first-ever half-marathon race.

Ian Lamb, Hannah Gr if fiths, Jackie Raw, Sharon Ta it, Wendy Pattison, and Melanie Day set their personal best.

Two club members competed in the Manchester Half Marathon.

Both achieved good personal best times in only their secondever half-marathon.

Michael Westlund finished in a time of 2 hours 1 minute and Alison Hornsby followed in 2 hours 9 minutes.

Duncan Smart competed in the Nottingham Sprint Triathlon, which was a Great Britain Team qualifier.

After the swim section, Smart moved upon the bike section and then further improved on the run to finish 32nd overall in 1 hour 15 minutes which a personal best time by over five minutes.

Two of the clubs most successful junior tri-athletes were in action at events staged at the

Leeds University Triathlon Centre.

In the Tri 3 event, Issy was a clear winner for the second time in the series.

Harry Butter worth was close second in the youth event.
