Excellent victory for ladies teams

There was another excellent week in the Driffield Tennis League for the Ladies teams of the Hackness & Scarboroug­h Club.

The A team came home from Long Riston in Division Two with a fantastic 7-2 victory to remain unbeaten.

Jamie Lee Thornton was playing her first match this year, partnering Heather Forbes and together they took all three of their sets.

This left Helen Reay and partner Zoe Hill and Helen Neil with Louise Tomlinson to take a very creditable two sets each.

The Ladies B team were at home to Bridlingto­n C in Division Five and they won 8-1.

Sue Barracloug­h and Chris Bernard won all three rubbers, while new pairing Vicki Calow and Sally Jubb played well together and they won all their sets.

Jilly Pigg and Jean Blenkiron won two of their rubbers decisively, but just lost out in the third set leaving this team with only one defeat so far.

Sc al by Ladies were very narrowly beaten 5-4 by M alto nina very competitiv­e encounter in Division One.

The match hinged on a tie break that unfortunat­ely went against the home team, but it was a good night for Jackie Speakman and Lynn Day, who won two sets as did Mandy Hillier and Jane Stockdale.

Sue Kendall and Sue Adamson battled in defeat.

The three Hackness & Scarboroug­h Men’s teams were all in action with some mixed results.

The flagship A team travelled to Driffield Rec Club A in Division One and were on the wrong side of an 8-1 defeat.

Only Paul Reddish and Martin Glassett came away with a set.

The other two pairs of Jim Mellor and young John Ellison and Roger Amstell with partner Paul Zac had to come home empty handed.

The B team entertaine­d Rudston at home in Division Two and had a clean sweep winning 9-0.

Two pairs of James Draper and Stuart Hughes and Adam Tildsley with Adam Magson did the damage leaving the more experience­d pair of Mark White and Bryan Edwards to coast a little and still gain the result.

In Division Five the C team had to travel to Rudston to play their B team and also won 9-0, seeing them remain remain unbeaten so far this season.

John Reay led they way with his partner Steve Brindle taking three sets, as did the other two pairs of Erkaits Inoue and Christian Miners and Jon Conyers with partner Steve Brennan.

Finally there was another easy win for Scalby Men in Division Six against Harpham B at home.

None of the pairs dropped a set and they too look certaintie­s for promotion.

Matt Thundercli­ffe has formed a formidable pairing with Bobby McNamara, Steve McNamara played with Tobie Hillier and Richard Stacey’s partner was Kevin Wood.
