A pleasant bank holiday Monday saw Borough Bowling Club stage its handicap knockout competition for the impressive Malton Cup. Pick of the early stages was Joyce Barron’s 21-17 routing of Barrie Watson and Caroline Watson’s 21-18 defeat of Mick Gates.

Youngster Liam Vasey fought his way to the semi-final but lost out 21-12 to the old head of Bob Walker.

Dave Waite used his handicap well to steer his way to the final beating Caroline Watson 21-18 in the semi- final.

Bob Walker could not afford any mistakes when having to give a nine-point start to Dave Waite, playing in his first season, in the final.

He did not make many poor woods and battled to a superb 21-17 victory to take the cup he last won 14 years ago.

In the consolation competition John Thundercliffe beat Di Purdy 21-10.

Borough has put out an appeal to members of its Manor Road club to help with a spruce-up day.

On Friday June 8, a repainting of the green seats – weather permitting– will get under way at 9.30am.

“We estimate it will take about one hour to sand and paint each seat. There are 11 seats,” said secretary Barrie Watson.

“If 12 people turn up with a brush – though we have got a few brushes – then we will be finished by 11am complete with a half-hour tea break after the 12th person has made the tea.

“If six people turn up we will still be finished by 11.30am but get no tea break

“If two people turn up we will still be there at 4pm and be absolutely worn out , so please come along if you can,” he said.

Its teams have a bye on Saturday to allow for Yorkshire Cup games.
