Malton on top in Rabbits battle

-

The weather was kind as Scarborough South Cliff Rabbits hosted their annual Open AM-AM team event on Thursday.

A total of 136 golfers from all over Yorkshire and the north of England competed in glorious sunshine despite earlier forecasts of cloud and rain.

Each team consisted of four players of any handicap with the best two scores to count on each of the 18 holes.

Scoring was very high with near perfect conditions and the winners on the day with a superb 92 points were a local team from Malton, closely followed by a team from Wike Ridge near Leeds with 89 points.

Prizes also went to teams from Aldwark Manor and Normanton.

Nearest the pin prizes went to players from Normanton, Wike Ridge, Hull and Forest Park and the 18th fairway had a prize for the straightest drive off the tee which was won by Scarthingwell member Dave Butterfield with a shot that stayed right on the middle of the line.

The non-golfing highlight of the day for the crowd gathered on the sun terrace was when a huge crow swooped down and stole the bacon sandwich of the starter Huw Roberts.

Rabbit captain John Gibson said: “It was a fantastic day with such a big entry from so many different clubs.

“All the players commented on the superb condition of the course. I have to thank the greenkeepers and the Rabbits’ committee for all their hard work.”
