Stalwart Scruton shines at Humber Half-Marathon

A record total of 32 club members competed in the Humber

Bridge Half-Marathon which consists of a course partly on the bridge, but with some significan­t climbs on the route including climbs onto both ends of the bridge. On what was one of the hottest days of the year so far, 13 club members including the first three finishers for the club recorded personal best (PB) times.

Michael Dowson was 11th overall of 1786 in 80 minutes 25 seconds. He was followed by two recent signing Oliver Brown, who was 32nd in 86.51, and Ben Langham in 91.02

Fay Hethershaw led the club’s 15 females in the race after finishing up in 48th overall of 667 females in 110.36.

She was followed by Rebecca Dent in 56th with a PB of 111.45, and Lisa Bourne 70th in 114.04.

The best veteran result was achieved by Neil Scruton, who was first Over-70 in 98.59 and was officially second Over-65.

He was subsequent­ly ranked second Yorkshire and seventh United Kingdom in the latest rankings list.

Sixty-two-year-old Liz Jones completed her 30th half marathon since she started running aged 55 at the New York Marathon.

She completed this landmark event in 2 hours 28 minutes.

Nick Harper competed in the Tri X Triathlon based at Ambleside, which is claimed to be the hardest ‘Iron Distance’ race in the world.

It consisted of a 2.8 mile swim followed by a 109 mile bike which included a 33% climb of Hardknott at 100 miles and 3,500m of climb.

The final run section of 25 miles was had further 1,100 metres of climb.

Nick completed the race in 14 hours 43 minutes, and was placed up in 14th of 87 finishers. Twenty-five competitor­s failed to finish.

Fifty club members competed in the third round of the club’s Summer Handicap Series, which consisted of a 2 mile course with one mile from Langdale Edge up the steep hill to Broxa and back.

After a mass start Dan Maw finished first in 11 minutes 30 seconds.

Harry Butterwort­h was second and Tommy Buckle came back in third.

Rhona Marshall was the fastest female and fourth finisher, Beckie May and Sue Haslam were second and third fastest.

Handicap points were awarded to those with the most accurate time prediction­s, Ryan Sheader finished just one second faster than his predicted time, and thus gained the maximum 100 handicap points.

Four club members took part in the latest Sewerby Parkrun.

David Field led the quartet in 29th overall of 221 finishers.

Alan Keenan was next home in 65th male and first Over-70. Patricia Keenan followed in 61st female and second Over-65.

Lesley Bayes completed her 101st Parkrun in 98th and fourth Over-65 Forty-two seniors competed in the main Scalby Nabs race which consisted of a three-lap course and a total 4.5 miles.

Fifteen-year-old Harry Butterwort­h finished first and was followed by Michael Dowson and Tommy Buckle.

Fifty youngsters took part in the associated one-mile Fun Run.

Frazer Ives was the first overall finisher and was followed by Hamish Wright and Cameron McDonald.

Laura Dove was fourth overall and first girl. Rebecca Dove was second girl and Hannah Sellars-Drury third.
