Hackness and Scarborough C suffer shock loss

-

Hackness and Scarborough

men’s C team suffered their first defeat for over 18 months at home to Long Riston who took the Division Five match 5-4.

This was very close and in doubt until the final round of rubbers when the visitors took two out of the three.

John Reay and his partner Steve Brindle took all three of their sets but were not backed up by the rest of the team.

Mark White with Erkaits Inoue took only one set and Jon Conyers and Christian Miners had to settle for zero.

The team should get back to winning ways this week away against Middleton B.

The men’s A team had an equally close match and they lost 5-4 at home to Cherry Burton in Division One.

The visitors came with a strong team especially at first pair and they defeated Roger Amstell and Jake Rawlinson in a thrilling match.

The home pair went on to beat the other two Cherry pairs, as did Jim Mellor and his partner Steve Mills, who also took two rubbers.

The match was decided between the third pairs from each team but this went the way of the visitors, leaving

John Ellison and Paul Reddish from Hackness and Scarborough without a win.

The men’s B team travelled to Brandesburton to play their B team in Division Two and had a much-needed 6-3 win that keeps them on course to be mid-table by the end of the campaign.

Stuart Hughes with Adam Tildsley are the team’s in-form duo, taking all three sets well backed up by Bryan Edwards and his partner Paul Zac.

Paul Jackson, playing with Tom Hunt, came away with an important win to complete an excellent result and the team’s first win for some time.

Scalby men continued their unbeaten run in Division Six when they beat Setterington 9-0.

The team are too good for their opposition at the level with Matt Thundercliffe partnering Richard Stacey, Bobby MacNamara and Simon Boddy and Tobie Hilliard had Jack Boddy as a partner.

This team are certain for promotion next year provided they stay together. Scalby also entered a mixed team in the Driffield League for the first time and they are going well and remain unbeaten in Division Five.

The latest opposition to be brushed aside were Driffield LTC C in another clean sweep.

The home team of Bobby McNamara and Jamie Lee Thornton, Simon Boddy with Louise Tomlinson and Matt Thundercliffe partnering Win Calvert. All three pairs didn’t drop a set on the night.

Both Filey teams suffered close defeats.

The men’s team faced Rudston B in Division Five and lost 5-4.

Alex Warters partnered his cousin Jacob and had a good evening taking two sets, but their teammates Ian McHale with David Hudgthon and Lawrie Snaith with Kevin Brown could only manage one set each.

However, Ian and David lost two tie breaks so they and the team were unlucky.

The ladies team also lost by the odd set at Brandesburton B in Division Three.

Sue Robson and partner Sarah Umpleby took two sets but Rachel Philliskirk and Lindy Snaith and Angela McKeown with Julie Collings could only manage one set each.

Both these teams could challenge for promotion.

Hackness and Scarborough ladies teams had walk overs.

This was unusual, particularly for the A team in division two. This team and the B team are handily placed in their respective divisions.
