Dear Reader

Recently I had the privilege to be invited behind the scenes at GCHQ Scarborough, where experts are working 24/7 to keep the UK population safe from threats such as terrorism and cyber attacks. The experience was fascinating and gave a real insight into the significance of the station and the amazing work being done there by its staff. For the purposes of this week’s feature, on pages 12 and 13, I decided to focus on the role of women as I knew that the base had actively been trying to recruit more females. This is no reflection on the abilities of men, or women for that matter, who equally make an invaluable contribution to our national security. However, it was interesting to hear that due to various reasons, women are under-represented in the workforce. Whether it is the issue of girls not choosing science subjects, or the fact that people think their qualifications may be unsuitable, the organisation is working to break down barriers.
