New school plans submitted by council
The new school will be built on the Middle Deepdale site
North Yorkshire County Council has submitted the plans for a new 420-place school at the Middle Deepdale development in Eastfield.
Plans for a new 420-place school in Scarborough have been submitted by the local education authority.
Following a consultation process, North Yorkshire County Council has filed the plans for the new education facility at the Middle Deepdale development in Eastfield.
More than 1,400 new homes are being built on the development.
The new two-form entry school will replace an existing school in Eastfield.
Overdale School will close and the students will move to the new facility once it has been completed. The new school will keep the name Overdale. A consultation event with residents and parents of pupils was held last month.
The planning application notes that: “The event was well attended and the reaction to the proposals was generally positive.”
It adds that moving the school became the preferred option rather than creating another, separate school.
The report adds: “The rationale was to avoid creating division between the historic Eastfield community and the new housing development if a wholly new school was developed. It also recognised the poor condition of the current Over dale Community Primary School buildings and the opportunity to replace them at a very low cost to the County Council.”
County Councillor Tony Randerson, the member for Eastfield and Osgodby, said although he had some concerns about the parking lay- out he was very positive that the plans had been submitted
He said: “I am delighted on behalf of Eastfield’s residents that this school is going ahead.
“The site’s location, between the existing Eastfield settlement and new housing developments to the north in Eastfield, supports a longstanding desire to provide improved facilities that link the old and the new parts of Eastfield.
“I have concerns about the drop-off points that are being proposed around the school and feel that they could be dangerous so I will be asking for those to be looked at as we have to ensure that the children and everyone else are safe.” It is hoped that a decision will be made in October.
