Filey lifeboat weekend
The team of lifeguards resuscitated him after he collapsed on the beach
A fun-filled programme of events is planned over the weekend to help raise funds for Filey Lifeboat Station. The Ramshackle Shanty Men will be performing their songs at 11am.
A fisherman has thanked lifeguards who saved his life after he suffered a cardiac arrest on Filey Beach.
Jamie Richardson, of Filey, said he was pushing his boat out when he collapsed and lost consciousness.
Quick to respond, nearby RNLI lifeguard, Cavan Walker, ran over to try to resuscitate Mr Richardson as lifeguard, Scott Brierley, joined him with lifesaving equipment.
The lifeguards called an ambulance and carried out CPR until senior lifeguard Henry Baxter arrived to help move him further up the beach to dry sand.
Local shop owner and former lifeguard and Filey RNLI lifeboat crew member, Gary Wilson, helped set up the defibrillator and provided extra support.
Mr Richardson, 51,said: “I’ve been down to see them I took them a sea trout each to say thank you. If it wasn’t for them I would have been dead.
“I was pushing my boat out and I collapsed. They all got an arm and a leg and helped bring me back to dry sand.
“I was told they were doing CPR for 10 to 12 minutes until a defibrillator was set up.
“I’m very grateful to everyone involved. It would have been a different story if they hadn’t been there.”
After paramedics arrived, Mr Richardson started showing signs of recovery. The air ambulance transported to Castle Hill Hospital in 12 minutes.
He was in hospital for a few days and is now recovering well.
RNLI lifeguard supervisor, Matt Jones, said: “The lifeguards did an incredible job and demonstrated the high quality training they receive in providing casualty care.
“Their prompt actions and early use of the defibrillator saved his life.
“As a team, we couldn’t be more proud.”
He added :“We’ d like to thank Gary Wilson for all of his help and support of the lifeguards, as well as to the paramedics of Yorkshire Ambulance Service for their quick response.
“And thanks also to Filey Coastguard Rescue team for their effective coordination and crowd management.”
