Deighton off to a flyer as Dukes Park deliver knockout blow to Borough in cup final

Dukes Park 1 and Borough 1 fought it out in the final of the Knockout Cup competitio­n at Robin Hood’s Bay Crown Green Bowls Club.

Right from the first woods, Bridlingto­n’s Dukes Park proved too strong for the Scarboroug­h side and won the match 8-4 (the last game was abandoned in heavy rain with the Scarboroug­h side having no chance of catching Dukes).

Andy Deighton got Dukes off to a flying start with a 21-2 return.

Winners, too, in the first four players were Geoff Price and Dennis O’Neill.

Only Borough’s Bob Walker came off a winner in the first four games – taking it 21-13.

The three other winners for Borough were Brian Whitehouse, Rita Bland and Mick Gates.

The Borough side was completed by Keith Watson, Barry Watson, Jo Gates, Tony Bland, Pete Charter, Steve Bell, Matthew Bell and Jack Bird.

Their captain is Dave Pryce who is out due to injury this season.

The winning side were: Gary Puleston, Kevin Gates, Stacey Deighton, Andy Deighton, Chris Bielby, Denise Dobson, Chris Dobson, Les Boyles, Dennis O’Neill, Dave Newby, Geoff Oldham and Geoff Price.

Their non-playing captain is Alan Bambrook who thanked Robin Hood’s Bay for hosting the event.

He commiserat­ed with Borough before accepting the trophy on behalf of the winning team.

The final of the Hospital Cup will be played at North Cliff on Sunday. Scratch time is 9.30am and the dress code applies.

The Hospital Cup is played between qualifiers from clubs across the coast.

There will be a singles merit at Hunmanby on Sunday August 12 with a start time of 9.30am.
