The Filey Fishtive Tree will be lit again on December 1, with Welcome To Yorkshire’s Sir Gary Verity doing the honours.

Filey’s fishtive Christmas tree is coming back for a second year on December 1.

After the success of last year’s fishy tree, fishermen on Coble Landing have decided to put their crab pots to good use once again by building a new tree. The structure, which promises to be bigger and brighter, will be officially lit up during the town’s switch on event on Saturday 1 December.

Filey fisherman Rex Harrison is one of the people behind the creation of the tree.

He said: “It’s going to be similar to last year’s but it’s going to be a bit different. There’s going to be a bit more green to make it look more like a tree but I can’t say too much because it’s going to be a surprise.

“The structure will go up the Sunday before the event and we’ll be decorating it during the week. We’ll have about 500 lights going on the tree.”

This year the tree won’t be the only fishy thing on Coble Landing. Next to the structure, there will also be a fishy sleigh designed by primary school children.

Rex added: “The event is something the whole town got involved with. The tree has become a bit of an attraction in Filey, it’s really popular and there’s a nice community feeling around it.”

On Saturday, lights will be switched on at 5pm. Members of the public are invited to make their way to Coble Landing from 4.30pm.

Sir Gary Verity, who will be attending Filey’s switch-on, said: “It’s such an innovative idea for the fishermen of Filey to create their tree out of crab and lobster pots. The town has had an incredible year, after welcoming the Tour de Yorkshire for the very first time, and being named The Sunday Times’ Beach of the Year in summer.

“This festive event will be a great opportunity to celebrate the town’s success and I’m looking forward to being a part of it by helping to kick off the countdown to Christmas!”
